Style by Giuseppe Bicceri for Fabio Scalia Salon The guest list has been secured, dress chosen and venue picked out. With wedding season waiting around the corner, you probably still have many decisions to make before the big day. At Fabio Scalia Salon, we want to help you decide on the final crowning detail of your look – yes, we’re talking about the hairstyle. From chignons to loose curls – brides have endless styling opportunities for the big day and picking only one can be hard. Therefore, we want to help you to be loyal to yourself and find your perfect match. “A wedding is such a big moment and a day many women have been dreaming about since they were little girls. It doesn't matter how many gowns, updos or make-up looks you’ve seen in the past – a wedding is highly personal and so should the look of the bride be. It’s important to always have the entire look in mind. I like to think about the bride as 100%, so if the dress is already 80%, you would have to go for a more simple hairdo to create a balance. “ – Giuseppe Bicceri We’re happy to introduce the series “A Dose of I Do” – a tool for all the brides-to-be to get inspired by and learn from. As hairdressers, we have to make sure that the bride looks good from the first look to the cake picture, and the 15 hours in between. Vanessa Hudgens by Jeff Lipsky for Women's Health Is there such thing as beauty sleep? Does your workout routine affect your strands? Can sleep deprivation cause hair loss? In this week’s blog post, Fabio reveals the healthy habits in our everyday life that have a huge impact on your hair and its health. Rinse your hair with cold water Finishing every shower with an ice cold rinse doesn’t seem that compelling. But the benefits are great. By finishing your shower with a cold rinse, you close the pores, stimulate your blood circulation and reset the skin and scalp. Also, this will make your color last longer! Meditate on a daily basis Meditation is a natural medication proven to have relaxing effects on our bodies, and the scalp and hair are no exception. Excessive stress can lead to hair loss, dandruff and itchy and oily scalp. A daily practice of meditation can help to reset your stress levels. Make sure to get enough sleep Speaking of stress: sleep deprivation is a form of stress and by now we know that stress may have great effect on hair loss. As we are sleeping, the skin, scalp and hair regain their strength again. In other words – sleep allows all parts of our bodies to function better. Exercise on a regular basis When we exercise we also sweat. Through sweat, toxins and other waste substances get rinsed out from the skin’s pores, giving us fresh and glowy skin. Likewise, when we sweat from our scalp, it helps to unclog the hair follicles, which gives room for new hair to grow. However, excessive exercise can have the opposite effect as it’s a way of stressing your body. Control your diet In a previous blog post, we have talked about 10 nutrients that are beneficial for your hair. Your hair will benefit significantly from a balanced diet. However, if you find it difficult to cover all vitamins needed for optimal nutrition, adding Nutrafol, a 100% drug free dietary supplement, to your daily routine could make a huge difference. Get yours in the salon today! Massage your body (and scalp!) A body or foot massage increases blood circulation in our bodies. This allows the hair follicles to receive all of the oxygen, nutrients and minerals that they need to grow. When it comes to scalp massage, it’s important to be gentle. Too much or a too aggressive scalp massage stimulates the sebaceous glands and as a result, more sebum is produced. Instead, aim for gentle movements clockwise and counterclockwise – and no nails! Miranda Kerr for Red Magazine As spring is approaching, there are plenty of reasons to update your look. The shift in seasons pretty much always brings with it a new hair color trend and as one of the best hair salons in New York City, staying up to date with the latest trends, techniques and color is our top priority. So we decided to ask our colorists Giulia Farella and Patrick Prinzo the question we all want the answer to: Which is the best hair color for a trendy spring look? “Spring is all about embracing the natural look and it should for sure be one that is easy to maintain. Therefore, face-framing highlights are a great option. They’re quick, they refresh the color and give it new life all in one session. Generally speaking, at springtime blondes wants to go blonder, while brunettes and redheads tend to stay the same as the sun will lighten up the strands anyways. I always recommend my clients to invest in a good hair treatment to keep the hair healthy and shiny through warmer seasons.” – Patrick Prinzo, Colorist Soho “After a long winter, clients tend to go brighter and funkier with their hair color. In other words, people want a fresh and new look. If my client isn’t quite ready to part with his or her winter hues, I would suggest adding a few highlights to slightly brighten up the look and create more dimension. As a colorist, I always have the final result in mind and a color that may look great on one client, might not fit another one. Trends come and go, but a great style could last forever. My advice would be to consult with your colorist to find a color that fits your skin tone, haircut and style in general.” – Giulia Farella, Colorist Brooklyn Heights Fabio Scalia is an upscale hair salon in SoHo and Brooklyn Heights, New York. Sofia Vergara for Cosmopolitan Dry, frizzy and dull hair? Then you might need to boost your strands with an in-salon treatment. In previous blog posts, we’ve talked about the importance of using the right products for your specific hair type and the difference it can make on your scalp and hair. But fewer people know the benefits of investing in an in-salon treatment every now and then. Today, treatments are often confused with hair masks or conditioners. The difference is that hair masks and conditioners can be done at home, while treatments need to be applied by a professional in a salon. While conditioners and masks act on the surface of the hair and provide temporary protection and strength to it, treatments help to restore and maintain strength from within. Treatments use concentrated formulas that can target the hair, the scalp or both. They require a specific application, products and sometimes also tools. For instance, our Milbon treatment requires a specific technique where the hairdresser has to massage the strands with his or her hands in order for the product to penetrate the hair. It is common that a treatment comes in different steps that play off from each other, such as the Olaplex treatment that has 3 steps. Your hairdresser will know which type of treatment you need to step out of the salon looking and feeling like a celebrity. "People have come up to me on the street and literally asked to touch my hair!" – Vicky, Fabio Scalia Salon Client For us, it’s important to always stay up to date with the latest trends, techniques and technologies. We are proud to offer top treatments in our salons from labels such as Milbon, Oribe, Label.m and Olaplex. Ideally, we recommend our customers to do a treatment every month and a hair mask once a week at home. An in-salon treatment can give you that boost you need to keep your color, cut and strands fresh for as long as possible. Schedule your treatment with us today here (Soho) or here (Brooklyn)
Lily Aldrige Contouring is a concept most people are familiar with today (we thank Kim K for that). The technique of sculpting something to look aesthetically pleasing has been making the rounds in beauty circles for years, but did you know you can do the same with your hair? We see this on the red carpet, in magazines and on celebrities – face framing highlights are here to stay and we will be seeing much more of this trend in 2018. Imagine you were going to the beach for weeks with your hair up in a ponytail. Only strands exposed to the sun will become lighter and as a result: brighter hair around the face. “If you want to achieve this natural look, I would suggest to not go brighter than two levels from your natural hair color”, says colorist Claudia Decicco. These type of highlights are great for clients who have never done color before, since it’s not as extreme as a full head of highlights. It’s also excellent for people who are dark brunettes and transitioning into becoming gray, as the changeover would become a bit softer. “From a colorist’s perspective, face framing highlights are probably the best way for me to get to know my client’s hair and condition as you only need to color a few locks for the result”, says Decicco. She goes on to say, “As a colorist, there are a lot of factors for me to take into consideration when I meet a new client; skin tone, natural pigments, eye color, and lifestyle to mention a few. You need to look at the whole picture to achieve the best results. Truth is, each client is individual but adding subtle highlights to lighten the hair around the face is an easy way to achieve a youthful and fresh look.” – Claudia Decicco, Colorist Soho Ready to try out this trend? Photograph by Craig McDean, Styled by Melanie Ward for W Magazine As one of the best hair salons in New York City, recreating celebrity looks is a part of our everyday life. Trending right now is Margot Robbie's effortless chic waves seen on the cover of the latest issue of W magazine. The look feels just right in time and the style has been seen on other celebrities such as Kim K and Selena Gomez. Want waves like Margot Robbie? We've got you covered! The COLOR: “I absolutely love this color on Margot Robbie since it’s beachy and chic all in one, yet a look needing low maintenance to upkeep”, says our colorist in Soho, Claudia Decicco. There are a lot of different factors to consider when deciding upon a new hair color. The integrity of your hair is our top priority and we value its condition, not just the appearance. Therefore, we always recommend you schedule a consultation with us before you begin your makeover. This look, in particular, is great for someone who has a darker root but wants to be blonde, since it’s a mix of the two techniques balayage and ombré. What makes this hair color great is that you can achieve the lighter tones at the ends and around the face, while your roots would still have dimension. Meaning the style doesn’t require touch up that often and would still look great the weeks in between visits to the salon. A light face framing would essentially contour & highlight the facial features such as eyes and cheekbones and the look is ideal for clients with medium to fine hair. Creating the STYLE: Depending on the condition of your hair, you’ll get this look by cutting your hair in a style with minimal to no layering at all. However, the length, depending on your features, has to be just right for this particular look. It can't be too long and it can't be too short – it has to be just right. To achieve the effortless, yet textured finish, you would start by prepping your wet strands with a simple Sea-Salt Spray. “The condition of your hair is, and will always be our top priority, so don’t forget the heat protectant spray before using hot tools,” says our celebrity stylist Luis Miller. When your hair is 100% dry, go over it with a 1-1&3/4” curling iron. Wrap random smaller sections of hair around to create a slight wave in your hair, leaving the ends more on the straight side. Finish the look by applying a Dry Texture Spray for hold, volume, and, of course, texture. The UPKEEP: As a luxury salon in New York, we’re all about long-term results. We want to educate you to make sure that you know how to take care of your hair and scalp in between visits. We have previously talked about how using the right products for your hair and taking care of your strands in between visits is crucial for its health. Did you know that using drugstore shampoo that can strip the color out very quickly? We definitely wouldn’t want that to happen! Want waves like Margot? Attempting professional-level hairstyling at home is no easy process. But using the right tools is sure to make it easier. A couple of months ago Fabio Scalia, owner of Fabio Scalia Salons, decided to produce his own line of brushes – professional high-end brushes that style and benefit the hair at the same time. Fabio, what made you want to produce your own line of brushes? – I’ve been using these types of brushes since I started doing hair at the age of 14. It was then, back in Italy, that I realized that I had a passion for high-end tools. At that time, a lot of hairdressers were using metal brushes, but my mentor taught me the importance of high-quality brushes and its effect on your hair’s health. I respected and valued the integrity of the hair so I wanted to educate myself further in this area. What is the difference between metal brushes and your brushes? – Most hairdressers use metal brushes because they think that they’ll get a better and quicker result. For me, styling shouldn’t be at the expense of your hair and scalp’s health. Metal brushes hold heat and don’t have the same heat control as bristle brushes. They could raise up the heat to a crazy level and that can cause severe damage to the hair. It’s comparable to taking a section of hair and going over it with your straightener repeatedly. Also, metal brushes usually have no flexibility so worst case scenario would be to rip your hair off while styling it. Well, we definitely wouldn’t want that to happen… – No, we sure don’t want that to happen! The bristles on our brushes bend much more easily and treat the hair in a more gentle way. By using a brush like this, you can massage and add shine to the strands at the same time. I believe that this also allows you to maintain your hair color better. If you want a long-term result and healthy hair, a good brush is definitely a well worth the investment. I dare to say that our brushes get better with time. Attempting professional-level hairstyling at home is no easy process. But using the Fabio Scalia brushes sure makes it easier. Get yours at the salon today! What is Olaplex and how does it work? Maintaining a vibrant hair color can be a really tough challenge. The key to having gorgeously colored locks (and keeping them that way) is all about proper hair care in-between salon visits. This does not mean adding major steps into your beauty regimen. In fact, it all gets down to small lifestyle changes that anyone can do. Here are 6 ways that you can extend the life of your hair color. 1. Stop using shampoo every single day Washing your hair too often doesn’t only result in a dry and lifeless mane, but it can also make your hair color duller. The shampoo strips your hair of color and also all natural oils from your scalp that nourishes and keep the hair looking healthy. The same oils are the ones that help your strands to take color better. That being said, keep your color fresh by using shampoo only a few times a week. Find out if you are you making these common washing mistakes here. 2. Avoid hot tools Turning up the heat on your styling tools can be tempting when you want to achieve the ultimate #hairgoals. However, that heat could be the reason that your color is looking a bit dull. Excessive use of hot tools can make your color fade faster than you wish, so avoid them as much as possible. 3. Use the right products In a previous post, we talked about the 5 products your really need and why, but when it comes to color-treated hair, you might want to upgrade your hair care routine slightly. Dyed hair requires more attention, so invest in salon-graded products for colored hair. 4. Give pigmented products a try Today, a lot of brands offer hair products such as shampoo and conditioner designed to enhance the already existing shade of your hair. Depending on the current color, the products may contain marigold or yellow shades for golden blondes, violet shades for white blondes and so on. A pigmented product can be used weekly or biweekly for a fresher tone. 5. Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate When having your hair colored, it’s more important than ever to keep the strands deeply hydrated. Hydrated hair holds onto color better and helps it to produce more shine than thirsty, dehydrated locks. Replenish your hair’s moisture by using a deep conditioning mask once a week. 6. Consult with a professional Figuring out what best for your specific hair is not easy. And let us be honest – no one knows your locks better than your stylist. Make sure you get their opinion on the best products and what you should be using when you get home from the salon. Are you ready for a makeover? Are hair extensions the right thing for you, and why should you even consider it? Well, have you ever wondered how celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, and Jennifer Lopez, can go from a lob (long bob) to long mermaid hair overnight? The answer to this question is hair extensions. Nowadays, hair extensions are about so much more than just extending your hair to make it longer. Extensions can also add fullness, give you the ability to experiment with different styles (did you know that you can add fake bangs!?) and colors. In fact, that girl with the beautiful, long flowing locks that you were admiring yesterday could well have been using hair extensions. However, there are a couple of things that you may want to consider before your makeover. Down below we have listed four things you need to know before your makeover. Hair extensions tip #1 First of all, getting the color right is crucial. Most people don’t have only one shade of color in their hair – the shades tend to be mixed. Therefore, picking extensions with blended colors is usually preferred if you want more natural looking hair. Hair extensions tip #2 Another factor to consider before you put in hair extensions is how well you’re able to take care of your locks afterward. Your hair extensions should be treated in the same careful way as you would treat your own hair. Consult with your hairstylist to make sure you get the right type of products specifically for your hair type. It is also important that you go to follow up appointments with your stylist to make sure you treat your locks the right way to maintain your new look. Hair extensions tip #3 Let’s talk about quality. Great looking extensions should look perfectly natural and blend in with your own hair. At Fabio Scalia Salons, we use authentic human hair of the finest material to achieve the ultimate hair goals. Hair extensions tip #4 There are a lot of different methods on the market today and it’s easy to get lost in the jungle of clip-ins, micro rings, and tape. At Fabio Scalia Salon, we are proud to offer Great Lengths , with hair sourced from the temples of India. Great Lengths provides the most luxurious extensions on the market, made from ethically sourced, fully traceable non-chemically treated human hair. Find out more about this method here.
